In this article we will be showing you some amazing things to do in Tokyo during summer, as well as discussing the summer weather in Tokyo and some things to be careful of. So keep reading to find out some of the must-do things in Tokyo during the summer season.

Tokyo’s Rainy Season

Taken from the anime film Tenki No Ko

If you didn’t know, Japan has a rainy season at the start of summer where it really does rain everyday, just like in the film ‘Tenki No Ko’. The rainy season in Japan is called ‘梅雨’ (tsuyu) and, although the weather is hot, the rain is very extreme and so can ruin many summer plans. In Tokyo, the rainy season starts in June and it has been predicted to start around the 8th of June this year. This then usually goes on to last until mid-late July. If you are wanting to partake in Tokyo’s summer activities and events, it is best to try to avoid going to Tokyo during the rainy season. This is because you will not be able to do many of the things on this list if you go during that time. Due to this we would recommend you visit from late-July to early-September.

Summer Weather in Tokyo

If you’ve never been to Tokyo during the summer before, you probably don’t know anything about Tokyo’s summer weather. As you may have heard, Tokyo is extremely hot during the summer and can reach extreme temperatures. Most days are above 30 degrees Celsius and can sometimes even get near to 40 degrees Celsius. On top of this, Tokyo is extremely humid which can make it hard to walk around all day and do certain activities such as shopping. If you’re someone who doesn’t not like such hot weather, we would recommend trying to during a different season such as spring or early autumn. However, if you like hot weather and want to partake in Tokyo’s summer activities just make sure that you pack according to the weather.

Things to Take Care of During Tokyo’s Summer

Clothes: Whilst cool clothes are essential to get through Tokyo’s sweltering summer weather, wearing too little clothing whilst walking around the city can cause unwanted attention. Most Japanese women do not tend to wear revealing clothing and men tend not to walk around without a shirt. Due to this it is probably best to choose a t-shirt and some appropriate bottoms. Having said this, it is completely up to you what you feel is appropriate to wear.

Umbrellas: Many Japanese women like to shade themselves from the hot summer sun with an umbrella. This may be confusing to see at first due to their not being any rain. If the streets are busy, these umbrellas can cause some problems and get in the way. Make sure to give everyone enough space and avoid any umbrellas if you are walking in a crowded place.

Suncream: Suncream and other summer essentials can be hard to find if you cannot understand or read Japanese. Due to this, we recommend you bring your own so you don’t have to struggle with translation apps. If you understand Japanese, you of course can skip this point!
