5 Sailor Moon Real Life Locations in Tokyo


What is Sailor Moon?

Sailor Moon is one of the most popular anime series ever, both in Japan and overseas. The story follows a group of girls who have the power to become ‘guardians’ which gives them special powers. Using these powers, the group of girls must fight against various enemies to protect the world and the people they love. The anime was developed from a popular ‘Shojo manga‘ series written by Naoko Takeuchi. Sailor Moon is still, to this day, one of the most popular anime and manga series ever!


What Are Real Life Anime Locations?

Real life anime locations are locations that appeared in anime that exist in real life! Due to many anime being set in Japan, Japan is full of real life anime locations that you can visit. The act of visiting these locations is known as ‘Seichijunrei’ (聖地巡礼) which roughly translates as ‘a pilgrimage to holy places’. There are tons of real life anime locations in Tokyo from various animes, many of which come from Sailor Moon!

1. Azabu Juban Station

The first Sailor Moon real life anime location on this list is Azabu-Juban Station, which is called ‘Juban Station’ in the Sailor Moon anime. All of the locations on this list exist in Azabu-Juban as this is the place the girls live and go to school. Due to this, it’s no wonder that the Azabu-Juban station featured in the anime. The stations look almost identical in real life and in the anime, making this the perfect place to take a picture!

2. Statue of Kimi-Chan

The statue of Kimi-Chan is a statue that was erected to commemorate the famous nursery rhyme ‘Akai Kutsu’, meaning ‘red shoes’. The statue appears through Sailor Moon in various shots, with the most famous being with Sailor Mars sitting next to the statue. The statue is located in Azabu-Juban, a short walk away from the Azabu-Juban station so you can visit it after visiting the Azabu-Juban Station!

3. Sendaizakaue Bus Stop

Sendaizakaue Bus Stop is where the Sailor Moon girls would wait for their bus to school. Although the bus stop looks quite different in real life, there are some similarities with the biggest one being the name of the bus stop. Both locations have the exact same name which is ‘Sendaizakaue’ or ‘仙台坂上’ in Japanese. This bus stop is located on the way to the next Sailor Moon real life anime location, making it the perfect place to stop and take a picture on your adventure around Azabu-Juban!

4. Azabu-Hikawa Shrine

Azabu-Hikawa Shrine is one of the most famous Sailor Moon real life locations in Tokyo. The shrine was featured multiple times throughout the anime and looks extremely similar in the anime to the real life location. The only difference is that in the anime the shrine is called ‘Hikawa Shrine’, whereas in real life the shrine is called ‘Azabu-Hikawa Shrine’. The shrine features so much throughout the anime due to the fact that Sailor Mars actually lives and works at the shrine, this is why the girls can often be seen hanging out there.

5. Patio Juban

Patio Juban is another real life anime location that featured throughout the Sailor Moon anime. Patio Juban is a small area/ park where people can just sit and chill out. Patio Juban is in a great location and is surrounded with shops and restaurants so there will be something for you to do even after you have visited the location! This location is also located in Azabu-Juban so you can visit it after visiting all the other locations on this list.


Why Are All Sailor Moon Real Life Anime Locations in Azabu-Juban?

It is said that the Sailor Moon manga writer, Naoko Takeuchi, used to live in Azabu-Juban during the time that she was writing the Sailor Moon manga. Due to this, she has claimed that she was inspired by the locations around the small town, which is why many of them appear in the manga. She has said that the shrine especially inspired her as she would visit it a lot during her time writing the anime. This is why Sailor Moon is mostly set in Azabu-Juban and why so many of the locations in the anime exist in real life!
