What Are Real Life Anime locations?

Real life anime locations, or ‘Seichijunrei’ (聖地巡礼) in Japanese, are locations that exist in real life that were featured in anime. Visiting these locations is a common practice in Japan, with many anime fans likening the act with a holy pilgrimage. Any anime that is set in Japan, or other real world countries, is likely to have some real life locations featured in it. I realized that when visiting these places, you can actually line up scenes from the anime with the real life location, the images featured below show this. Check out my TikTok to see full videos of me lining up the anime scenes with real life. Below is a list of every real life anime location I have visited in Tokyo (for specific locations of each places listed, check the map above)!

Real Life Anime Locations in Tokyo

Below is a list of all the real life anime locations in Tokyo that I have visited so far. I have so far visited locations from 10 anime and plan to do more in the future! Each one of these locations is listed on the google map at the top of this page, so to find out the specific locations of them make sure to check the map.

Your Name (君の名は)

Yotsuya Station

This is where Taki and Okudera-senpai meet to go out on their date. There are multiple Your Name real life anime locations around the station featured in this scene but I have included two of my favorites above. The JR Chuo Line stops at Yotsuya Station making it a very easy station to access!
I found all these locations fairly quickly and easily just by looking around the station.

Suga Shrine Steps

The Suga Shrine steps are were Taki and Mitsuha meet each other at the end of Your Name. Being able to visit this location is truly magical and it makes you feel like you are in the anime!
This real life anime location is possibly the most popular and well-known anime location ever. These steps are located a short walk away from Yotsuya Station so can be visited after seeing the previous location. For more details on how to get to the steps, check out the google map above.

Shinanomachi Footbridge

This location was featured in Your Name 3 different times, each time at a different time in the day and with different characters. I love the way the anime used the same real life location to show the passing of time and how Taki and Mitsuha are connected but cannot manage to meet one another. This location is a bit far away from the locations previously mentioned so you will have to get the train to reach this bridge (check the google map at the top of this page for more info).

Meijijingu-Gaien Crossing

Like with the Shinanomachi Footbridge location, this real life crossing is featured twice in Your Name. This is done to show the passage of time and change in Taki’s mood over time; due to him being pre-occupied with Mitsuha. The location itself is not busy at all and you can see amazing autumn leaves there in autumn! This location is within walking distance from the previous location on this list.

Tokyo Revengers (東京リベンジャーズ)

Tama River

This Tokyo Revengers real life anime location featured in one of the first episodes of Tokyo Revengers, after Takemichi meets Mikey and Draken for the first time. The anime looks extremely accurate to real life, especially if you go when the sun is low on a clear day! I got the perfect day for seeing this location…the clouds even look like they are in a similar position.

Tama Parthenon

Tama Parthenon was featured as a location in Tokyo Revengers during Takemichi’s first ever fight. The scene is quite long so many different locations around these steps were featured in the anime. Although the real life location and the anime location look a little different, it is clear that the Tokyo Revengers author based the anime location off of this one.

Shibuya Bridge

Shibuya Bridge is another Tokyo Revengers real life anime location. It featured later on in the anime when Takemichi and Chifuyu go to talk to Baji. Their conversation takes place on this bridge that exists in real life near Shibuya! Some things are different, however I think this is because this scene is set in the past and so the author most likely made the location accurate to how it looked that year!

Death Note (デスノート)

Shinjuku Station Underground

Shibuya Station featured as a real life anime location in Death Note when Light goes to kill Raye Penber. The scenes featuring Light behind Raye, all took place at this location in Shinjuku Station, before Raye eventually goes to the metro line and dies. Although the anime location is very accurate to the real life location, unfortunately due to Death Note now being a very old anime, some things have changed. For example, the Lotteria logo and shop has changed, leading to the anime and real life looking less accurate to one another. However, you can still see how the two line up and how accurate the anime has made the location to real life!

Hibiya Park

Hibiya Parked featured as one of the locations that Light and Naomi walk through together before he kills her. Although I’m sure there are more locations throughout the park that are featured in the anime, I only managed to find one location that I was sure was in the anime. It is hard to see in this picture but the real life monument looks almost identical to the monument shown in the anime!

Around Kasumigaseki Station

After visiting Hibiya Park, Light and Naomi walk around Kasumigaseki Station, eventually reaching the Metropolitan Police Department, where Light’s dad is working. The police department featured in the anime is the real life Metropolitan Police Department that exists near Kasumigaseki Station! It is so cool being able to follow where Light and Naomi walked together and eventually reach the real life place where Light’s dad worked! I recommend visiting on a cloudy day to really feel like you’re in the anime.

Tokyo Ghoul (東京喰種トーキョーグール)

Shinjuku Station East Exit

Shinjuku Station East Exit was featured as a Tokyo Ghoul real life location when Kaneki goes to meet Touka. It is only briefly featured but it is very fun to see how accurate the anime is to real life! I recommend visiting on a cloudy day to match the vibes of the anime.

Kabukicho

Just like with the previous Tokyo Ghoul real life anime location, Kabukicho was featured briefly after Kaneki and Touka meet. The area can get quite busy in the evening so make sure you visit during the day!

Kabukicho Crossing

Although this Tokyo Ghoul real life anime location is in a similar place to the location just mentioned, this crossing actually featured in a different time in the anime when Kaneki is alone. I would recommend visiting during sunset as this is when the real life location looks most accurate to the anime!

Jujutsu Kaisen (呪術廻戦)

Harajuku Station

Harajuku Station featured as a Jujutsu Kaisen real life anime location towards the beginning of the anime when Itadori and Fushiguro meet up with Gojo. Due to the anime being so new, the anime location looks extremely accurate to the real life location!

Takeshita Street

After Itadori and Fushiguro meet Gojo, the three of them go to meet Nobara for the first time. After they meet on Takeshita street, the four of them then visit the coin lockers shown above that are located at the top of a building on Takeshita Street. This Jujutsu Kaisen real life location is also very accurate to the real life location!

Steins;Gate

Radio Kaikan

Radio Kaikan appeared multiple times throughout Steins;Gate due to it being the building that the time machine crashed into in the first season. Many of the main characters can be seen stood in front of the building such as Okabe, Mayuri and Kurisu. Radio Kaikan is a popular spot to stop by for anyone visiting Akihabara.

Kanda Fureai Bridge

Kanda Fureai Bridge also acted as a real life anime location in Steins;Gate. Both the bridge itself and locations around the bridge were featured multiple times throughout the anime with different characters. You can see from the pictures above, how accurate the anime is to real life!

Akihabara Crossing

This real life anime location from Steins;Gate is featured during a scene when Okabe and Mayuri are walking around Akihabara with one another. Although this location is only shown briefly in the anime, it is amazing to see how accurate it looks to real life!

Akihabara Station

Akihabara Station is another real life anime location in Steins;Gate. As most of the anime takes place in Akihabara, the station acts as an important symbol of people coming and going. The station has changed quite a lot since the anime was made, so it is not as accurate to the anime as it once was. Having said this, it is still worth visiting and comparing with the anime!

Your Lie in April (四月は君の嘘)

Shakuji River

Shakuji River is one of Your Lie in April’s many real life anime locations. The river featured in one of the first episodes of the anime when Kosei and Kaori walk home together. I waited until spring to visit this location so I could see the sakura in full bloom just like they are in the anime. Due to this, I highly recommend visiting this location during sakura season if you can!

Shakuji Park

Shakuji Park was shown right at the beginning of Your Lie in April as Kaori is chasing a cat on her way to school. The place with the vending machines looks extremely accurate to the anime, I was shocked! There was also some other people taking pictures there so I guess it is quite a popular location for Japanese fans of Your Lie in April.

Weathering With You (天気の子)

Tabata Station

Tabata Station features multiple times throughout Weathering With You, meaning that there are tons of locations from the anime all around the station. Above are the main 5 that I found but apparently there are even more! I went on a clear blue day but it might be better to go when it is raining if you really want to feel like you’re in the anime!

One Punch Man (ワンパンマン)

Saitama’s Apartment

Saitama’s apartment and the street that it exists on in One Punch Man exists in real life! The street and apartment itself were both based off of a real apartment and street located in Meidaimae. Although there are slight differences between the anime and real life, the anime is still very accurate to the real life locations. This is one of my favorite real life anime locations!

Durarara!! (デュラララ!!)

Ikebukuro Station

Ikebukuro Station featured multiple times in Durarara!! and multiple locations throughout the station was featured! I found the underground locations as they were near the train that I was taking but make sure to try to find more if you end up going!

Sunshine-Doori

Sunshine-Doori acted as one of the main locations throughout the anime featuring many of the characters hanging out there. There were multiple locations along Sunshine-Doori featured in the anime but these are two that I found. Sunshine-Door is one of the main streets for shopping in Ikebukuro so it can get quite busy!

Ikebukuro Central Park

Ikebukuro Central Park featured as a Durarara!! real life anime location briefly when Anri visited it and is shown standing in the park. The park is very pretty and peaceful, I would highly recommend visiting it if you get the chance!

Ikebukuro Eki-Mae Park

This park featured in Durarara!! multiple times and was a popular place for the characters to go to hang out. The park is fairly small but is very easy to access as it is right near the station. if you find yourself in Ikebukuro, I would recommend checking out this location and comparing it to the anime.
