What is ‘Momiji’?

‘Momiji’ is a Japanese word describing maple tree leaves when they turn red in autumn. The kanji for ‘momiji’ is 紅葉, 紅 meaning deep red and 葉 meaning leaf. The idea of ‘momiji’ has a strong cultural significance in Japan due to the fact that going to view these leaves has been a popular activity throughout Japan’s history and even today. Momiji can be seen throughout Japan and around Tokyo, with there even being ‘momiji forecasts’ available on the news in Japan.

What is ‘Kōyō’?

‘Kōyō’, like momiji, is related to the autumnal leaves of Japan and even shares the same kanji as ‘momiji’ (紅葉)! However, unlike the word ‘momiji’, ‘kōyō’ is a word used to describe the process of the leaves in Japan changing from green to red rather than the leaves themselves. The world also denotes certain emotions and feelings that are connected to autumn, and is often used metaphorically in Japanese literature and poetry.
